Transgender – 1965 – John Oliven, in his book, Sexual Hygiene and Pathology, used the term transgender to mean a person who identifies with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. Gay – 1955 – the term gay was used throughout Europe earlier, but this is the year most agree that gay came to mean same-sex relationships between men. 1967: Sexual Freedom League formed in San Francisco in support of bisexual people. 1872 – the pamphlet, “Psychopathia Sexualis” was translated from German and one of the first times the term bisexual is used.
Homosexual – 1869 – Hungarian journalist Karl-Maria Kertheny first used the term homosexual.īisexual – 1894/1967. Lesbian – 1732 – the term lesbian first used by William King in his book, The Toast, published in England which meant women who loved women. Alan Mathison Turing was the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence, yet he was prosecuted for homosexual acts performed in private. Housman, and Ralph Waldo Emerson had to face the society’s wrath for their private homosexual activities. Despite the pioneering works of the early gay rights activists, men like Oscar Wilde, A. George Cecil Ives was another gay man who was an early homosexual law reform campaigner. The 19th century German writer Karl Heinrich Ulrichs is seen today as the pioneer of the modern gay rights movement. But with growing awareness about the LGBT community, it is becoming increasingly possible for gay people to come out of the closet and build a meaningful life for themselves.
It is not easy being a gay man in the contemporary world! With the members of the LGBT community being subjected to rampant discrimination and social ridicule, life is sure very challenging for gay men.
